HIGHLIGHT AND SADDEST PART OF MY WEEK

(Laura and Ella- First day of 1st Grade)

This week has seen major changes in the DeVage household. This past Monday was the highlight and the saddest day all in the same and all for the same reason. At 7:50am Monday August 23, 2010 my little girl Ella started the first grade. What does that mean? That means she is at the big kid school now. She is a lamb in world full of wolves (extreme I know, but she is my baby). Monday we walked her to her class and bid her goodbye. Monday was not hard for me…Tuesday however, destroyed me. I went to walk her in and she said, “Daddy, I’m good. I know where to go.” It was in that moment that I knew I had to begin letting her go just a teeny tiny bit. A tear may have entered the corner of one eye for just a second, but so did a bit of pride in my soul for the little girl that my baby is becoming. I am so proud of her and how she keeps growing up.

How did you handle the first day of school for your first child?

I SUBMIT LOVE GETS NO BETTER THAN THIS

I love these two more than words can express. I love how Natalie’s hair is all crazy and how Ella is so happy. I submit that I can not love two human beings more than these two!!!

SUNDAY MORNING THOUGHTS ON MONDAY MORNING

Today is already a great day. I have registered my oldest child for 1st grade, hung out with my wife, drank a chocolate banana vivano at Starbucks and am currently listening to Muddy Waters Blues album and praying and reflecting on our day yesterday at Compass Roanoke. I like sitting on what happened the day before for a night. It really gives me fresh perspective on what and how God moved. Here are a few highlights from our day yesterday.

  • Our set up team never ceases to amaze me. They LOVE what they do and I must say that I LOVE them for it. They are unreal.
  • Rob and our team did an incredible job with the Beatles song “All You Need Is Love”…British accent and all :-) … to open the service.
  • This series on Proverbs is reaping huge benefits in the lives of our people. To have the whole body going through the same scriptures and reading the same things brings a cohesion to the church unlike anything else we do.
  • Yesterdays message on love brought more conviction to people than I could have ever imagined. Talked with numerous people who desire to show and be love to those around them.
  • I LOVE when our people have fun and laugh together in church.
  • We had an INCREDIBLE couple join our church in first service yesterday. The Baker’s are an unreal addition to our campus.
  • After first service I talked with another family that is eager to join our church this next weekend.
  • First service was PACKED!!! Just goes to show that I have no idea how and when God is going to move.
  • 10:30 service had such a sweet spirit in it yesterday. Was so good to see and hear people worship with all they have.
  • We were done at 12:05 yesterday!!! Our team rocked it…
  • Had lunch with 15 people after church yesterday. I sat back and was overjoyed to see these families that did not really know each other a month ago laughing and sharing life together yesterday. One family commented on how nice it was to just have people they could be real with.
  • Knowing that God is moving HUGE in our campus and church brings me to a level of joy and humility that I cannot even express in words. So privileged to get to speak to and lead the body in Roanoke. I still cannot believe that we GET TO DO THIS!!!

Those are a few of my thoughts. What was it that blew you away yesterday? Don’t forget that we continue in our series “LET IT BE” on Sunday. This next week we are going to talk about how to control our tongues. That one should be fun. Also, don’t forget to pick up your copy of “Everyday Wisdom” that our teaching team wrote. Today is day 9 in the book. Love to hear what God is speaking to you through those devotionals. Final thing…Who are you bringing with you next week to Journey with us? Have a great week. Look forward to hanging with all of you this next weekend.

RESCUE A GIRL FROM THE SEX TRADE

image via she dances dot org

My good friends over at the organization SHE DANCES are in the middle of a campaign to raise money to get their safe house in Honduras funded for the next year. They are asking 200 people to commit to $20 a month for the next year. It seems a small price to pay to give girls their lives and innocence back. Here is what they wrote on their website recently:

Every girl deserves to dream. Every girl deserves hope. Every girl deserves to love and to be loved. Every girl deserves to dance. When she dances she is alive… when she dances she is free. She’s free to live, to laugh, to love. She’s free in her heart… she’s free in her spirit. Hope moves within her… beauty finds her. She Dances.

  • Our heartbeat… To see freedom in the lives of the 27 million people in our world today that are held as slaves.
  • Our cry… To believe in the future and hope of the 800,000 girls who are trafficked across international borders each year for the purpose of sexual exploitation.
  • Our passion… To seek a haven for a child who is one of the estimated 1.2 million children trafficked each year.
  • Our prayer… To create a movement of response to injustice in our world within artists, musicians, organizations, churches, and every breathing soul.
  • Our vision… To show love turned into action and then freedom.

You and I have the ability to give these girls the things that we have everyday…FREEDOM!!! Please go check them out and find a way to sacrifice $20 a month to help. Feel free to go to our Remedy For This Heart website and purchase the shirt under human trafficking. All of the proceeds go straight to SHE DANCES.

The last two days my good friend Cal and I spent our time in Houston, TX with our good friends Sara Douglas and Nathan Lewis. This weekend was their wedding and we were pumped to go down and shoot this one. We did their engagement photos back in the fall and have been anticipating the wedding day every since. They are a beautiful couple with amazing friends and incredible families. Yesterday was a thirteen and a half hour photo fest with some AMAZING people!!! Here is a preview of what’s to come.

VINYL MAKES ME THINK BETTER

Yesterday was a good day. The morning was spent getting much done and making contact with many people.

12:15pm, much like most Wednesday’s, was time to go to the elementary school and mentor the 3rd grade students our staff has the privilege to pour into each week.

Lunch with Jeremy Peterson followed as we ate quesadillas and burritos to commemorate Cinco De Mayo.

The rest of the afternoon was spent writing, preparing and getting ready for some great meetings with some great people the rest of the week. I knew that time was going to be tight the rest of the day due to the fact I was going to have another meeting with some AWESOME people again last night.

4:00pm I went and picked up my girls from school and headed home to spend an hour and a half with them.

One of the things I love about my girls is that they love art in any form and they really love listening to music on vinyl. So we did what any person needing to relax did…

We pulled out Ella’s art set she got for Christmas. Now this is not just any art set, this is a professional art set with drawers of charcoal, pencils, blending pencils, erasers, clay and paints.

I put on the Dead Weather Album first. The girls went silent, as did I, and we began to just draw and create whatever came to mind. Then we switched the vinyl to Led Zeppelin.

Ella and Nat are now bobbing their heads to “Good Times, Bad Times.” As a result I had a very therapeutic hour of sketching, drawing, and silence with my two little girls.

Not sure why, but I ended drawing something that started quite dark and ended up having color and glimpses of life. I MUST DO THIS MORE!!!

Laura came home and began to make dinner. What followed was a great salad with orange peppers, cheese, nuts, chicken and crasins in it. As we sat an ate the record finished spinning and the needle made its way back into the locked position. We sat in silence as a family and ate. It was relaxing for the few moments we got to do so yesterday.

What creative thing makes you relax and think better?
